The Clean & Check

The Clean & Check

By: Susan Summers

When you walk into Colonial Jewelers, there is an abundance of dazzling jewelry all around you. While you may think that the focus of your visit is going to be that gorgeous piece you cannot imagine leaving without, one of the first questions you'll be asked is, "may I clean your jewelry?"

While freshly cleaned jewelry certainly has an aesthetic appeal, there is so much more to the cleaning process! Read below to discover what is involved in the process, recommendations for how often to come for this service,

So what exactly happens during the clean & check process? First, the sales associate will inspect your ring using 10x magnification. They will be looking to ensure that all the prongs have enough metal and that they are positioned correctly to secure all of your stones. The associate will also look for signs of wear, and will advise you on what changes to make to ensure your ring remains in prime condition. If your ring needs repairs at this visit, we will go over that with you as well. Think of your ring inspection as being akin to regularly-scheduled preventative maintenance for your car.

I've noticed that you offer a complimentary lifetime warranty. Could you tell me a little more about this? Starting in 2015, the Colonial Jewelers Lifetime Warranty extends to all engagement rings (including the diamond or gemstone as well as the setting) purchased with us. The warranty covers normal wear and tear such as retipping worn prongs, tightening prongs, replacing missing side stones up to 0.20ct, one sizing per year as needed, and one refinish per year as needed. The only requirement of the wearer is to have us inspect the ring once every six months. Should you move, we can help you find a jeweler who is part of the network in which we participate as you will be able to keep your warranty active through that jeweler instead.

How do I ask for this service? The process is simple, and takes about five minutes. When you are greeted by a sales associate, indicate that you are here to have your ring inspected and provide the purchaser’s name if your ring was purchased with us. This ensures that we are able to log the inspection appropriately, and that your warranty will remain active.

If your ring is in good standing within the warranty, repairs necessary due to normal wear are covered. This includes tightening stones, retipping prongs, refinishes, and sizings. Should your ring need to be repaired due to unusual damage to the ring such as bent prongs or shank, you will be responsible for the cost, and then your warranty will be reinstated. The good news is that your ring insurance will often cover these damages, and of course, we will provide you with a quote to submit to your insurance.

In addition to leaving with a sparkly ring, it’s always fun to take a look at our latest collections and add to your wishlist — you never know who will need some inspiration throughout the year!

How do I know when to come for my clean and check? We are pleased to announced the new Clean and Check Calculator! Simply enter the date of your last inspection, and it will calculate your due date for you. Then add a calendar alert in your phone for a month prior to your due date in order to give yourself plenty of time to make it to the showroom.

Do we clean and inspect jewelry other than rings? Absolutely! Bracelets are another piece worth checking more often than not — on the same schedule as your rings, if possible. Though they do not carry a lifetime warranty with us, we are happy to ensure they are wearing well for you.

Do we inspect jewelry that was not purchased at Colonial Jewelers? Yes! We are here for all of your jewelry needs. It is our goal to become your jewelry expert for life, and ultimately we want you to enjoy wearing jewelry as much as we do (without the worry!)
