How to Secretly Determine Ring Size

How To Secretly Determine Ring Size

By: Susan Summers

Proposing to the love of your life is a big deal! It might also be leaving you with a million questions running through your head.

After hours of stealthily researching her style and diamond preferences, you think you’re on your way to creating the perfect engagement ring for her - when suddenly you realize — you don’t have her finger size!! Don’t worry, we’ve done some research into the advice that’s out there about how to discreetly calculate her finger size without throwing off the whole surprise, and we’re here to tell you that it doesn’t involve tying a string around her finger, imprinting her ring into a fresh bar of soap, or measuring where her ring fits your pinky finger.

While there’s no way to precisely determine an accurate ring size without professionally measuring her finger at a jeweler, we do have a few tips to help you make the best decision you can before popping the question.

First and foremost, rest assured that all rings purchased at Colonial Jewelers can be resized. The structural integrity of the ring, given the quality of the metal and its alloys, as well as the craftsmanship put into making it, allow the ring to withstand any sizings or repairs throughout its lifespan. There are, however, rings out there that are not solid precious metal (meaning they’re lighter in weight or hollow on the inside) and while those are cheaper upfront, they do cause issues down the road - so be aware of what you’re purchasing.

To gain insight on her style, maybe you grabbed a ring or two from her jewelry box. If it’s a promise ring, you’re in luck! Provided that she wears it on her left ring finger, you can compare the interior diameter of the ring to a ring size chart and et voila!

Proceed with caution when using other rings, though – rings that she wears on different fingers would produce a different size than her left ring finger, where her engagement ring will be worn. And while the string test seems to be like the perfect DIY finger sizer, tying a string around her finger will fit differently than a solid metal ring sizer of the correct millimeter width. Remember that the width of the ring (and sizer) directly influences the fit.

Don’t worry too much - it’s absolutely okay if you don’t know her finger size! It’s more common than you might think for a woman to need her engagement ring resized after being proposed to (worth it, to keep up the surprise!).

We suggest ordering her ring in a stock size, which is usually a 6.5 or 7 depending on the designer. Since the average ladies finger size is somewhere between a 5 – 7, you can bet the ring will slide right on her finger. If you think her fingers are on the smaller side, we can provide you with a piece of silicone coil to wrap around the base of the shank to make it fit her more snug until you can make it in the store to size her finger.

Ultimately, it’s not a great idea to guess, or to go up or down a finger size based on the appearance of her fingers or another ring that she’s tried on. Trust us, and let us help you make the right decision!
